    Dear DE Feo Raffaele

Thank you for the letter and information that you sent Tate Modern, which have now been
Discussed by the curatorial team at Tate Modern and have been passed to me for reply. While we
Appreciate your thoughtful proposal, exhibitions and displays are planned far in advance. Our
Calendar is now completely booked through 2009, and we are reluctant to commit to any new
Projects until we are fuether along in planning for the shows that are currently being organised by
    Our own curatorial staff.

I am sorry to be the bearer of such disappointing news, but on behalf of the team here, I should
Like to wish you every success in realising your idea elsewhere.

Thank you for thinking of Tate Modern.

    Yours sincerely,

The Legend of Nessie, the monster of Loch Ness

An interview of the mayor of Volturara Irpina (Avellino, Italy)

An export report confirms the authenticity of the work of Escher which policeman Raffaele De Feo is in possession of. Volturara has a real masterpiece and has to know how to valorize it properly.

All denials or accusations have been proved to be unjust by the expertise which has been officially presented to the authorities .

All art lovers can visualize in Escher’s unpublished charcoal picture a figure which reminds us of Munch’s Howl, and even manages to give us the same kinds of strong sensations. It may seem strange, or even a hoax, which may cause emotional stress to the academics and many other real art loves, that such a masterpiece finds itself in a village in the South of Italy called Volturara Irpina.

In this small town the legend of Gesio is still very strong amongst its population. Gesio managed to kill the dragon which was hidden in the Lake Dragone, liberated the village and gave the barbarian treasures to the people which it had protected for many years. There is a certain similarity between the two legends.

The figure in Escher’s picture can be seen as the new Gesio who uses a fifer instead of a sword. His treasure can be metaphorically recognized in the immense richness which this work of art is giving to the village. Everyone will one day remember the tenacity of this energetic policeman who seems to have been chosen by destiny to make his hometown famous worldwide. It almost seems as if the monster of Lochness has gone through the centre of the earth from Scotland and reached the unknown southern village of Volturara Irpina, in order to relive once more.

The work was not given directly to Mr De Feo. It was a gift from a Swiss lady. She thus is the meeting point between the vagabond artist and the village in Irpinia, a real pearl of nature.
